It began in the 1700s during the Anei period when Hisano Hanemon from Hakoda town built a multi-chambered climbing kiln with a Shigaraki potter named Chouemon. Chouemon brought with him the technique of glost firing, and this led to the birth of Kasama ware. Kasama pieces are generally high-fired and made of stoneware clay containing high amounts of iron.
